Catanduanes State College
The late Congressman of Catanduanes, Jose M. Alberto is the founding father of the Catanduanes State Colleges. He authored and sponsored RA 6341, which converted the former Virac National Agricultural and Trade School into the Catanduanes State Colleges. It was finally passed in Congress on June 19, 1971.
When the school year 1971-1972 opened collegiate courses in Education, Arts and Sciences, Arts and Trades, Commerce as well as graduate courses in Education were opened. As early as the summer of 1972, graduate courses in Education were already offered.
In 1972, RA 6590 was passed amending RA 6241 authorizing the Board of Trustees of the CSC to open additional courses. In view of this, additional courses were offered such as fisheries, nursing and midwifery engineering and short-term vocational courses. It was also during this year that high school courses were offered in the municipalities of Bagamanoc, San Miguel, Gigmoto, Baras and Caramoran. High Schools under the supervision of the Bureau of Public Schools and Bureau of Vocational Education, namely the Catanduanes National High School, Cabugao School of Handicrafts and Cottage Industries, Caramoran School of Fisheries, San Andres Vocational School and Pandan School of Arts and Trades were transferred to the CSC in accordance with a memorandum from the Secretary, Department of Education dated October 27,1972.
Towards the end of 1974, Presidential Decree No.624 was passed. This decree recognized and confirmed the operation of the secondary schools and further authorized its maintenance and operation by the Colleges. However in 1988, these high schools were transferred to the DECS.
Today, The CSC is enjoying the prestige of being the only public institution of higher learning in Catanduanes with its graduates topping various national licensure examinations.
Catanduanes State Colleges (CSC) was established in 1971 by virtue of R.A. 6341, later amended by R.A. 6590 through the efforts of the late Cong. Jose M. Alberto who practically authored and proposed the conversion of the Virac National Agricultural and Trade School (VNATS) offering vocational secondary education into a tertiary level school. The first president was Mr. Pedro B. Tabuzo (1972), followed by Dr. Jacinto A. Medallada (Acting President 1972-1986), Dr. Rudolfo V. Azanza (President 1986-1992), Dr. Ernestina P. Averilla (Officer-In-Charge 1990-1993), Dr. Adolfo S. Bagadiong (President 1992 - 2003) and Presently Dr. Asuncion V. Asetre (President2003 - to date).
